Conservation
The Arrowhead Fly Fishers club takes an active role in conservation. Projects are often in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the US Forest Service, and St. Louis County Land department.
Fish Stocking
Each year in May the Arrowhead Fly Fishers and the MN DNR stock trout in several of the local rivers. These stocking events are scheduled to involve grade school children who assist with releasing the fish into the water. An educational presentation is provided by the DNR to the school children as they learn about our fisheries resources. See this page for updates on future fish stocking dates.
Tree Planting - Gunflint trail
The Arrowhead Fly Fishers along with the US Forest Service in Grand Marias, MN planted 1500 trees in the ripiarian area of several trout lakes in May 2008.
Uskabwanka River Restoration Project
In cooperation with the MN DNR the Uskabwanka River, a tributary to the Cloquet River, the Arrowhead Fly Fishers club was involved in beaver dam removal and planting trees. We are in the process of obtaining grant monies to further the restoration efforts on the Uskabwanka river to be awarded in the Spring of 2009. These grant monies were awarded to the Arrowhead Fly Fishers in late 2009. During the Spring of 2010 club members along with the Boy Scouts planted several hundren cedar trees along the river bank. Each cedar tree was protected with a 4 foot wire mesh to prevent deer drowsing. It was gratifying to see the trees planted from previous years to be doing so well - some more than 7 feet tall. Thanks to all that assisted in the project. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
