Conservation
The Arrowhead Fly Fishers club takes an active role in conservation. Projects are often in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the US Forest Service, and St. Louis County Land department. Listed below are conservation projects for the 2009 calendar year.
News from the Minnesota DNR
The Minnesota DNR is requesting comments on proposed rules changes related to fishing. All the Lake Superior rule changes can be viewed at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/areas/fisheries/lakesuperior/lsmp.html. Comments on proposed rules changes may be submitted until 4:30 pm on May 29, 2009 by calling toll free: 1-888MINNDNR or 651-259-5200 or the DNR web page : www.dnr.state.mn.us, or in writing at: Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4037.
DNR changes of interest include:
- Eliminate the aggreegate limits on brook, brown, and rainbow trout in Lake Superior and Lake Superior tributary streams and reduce the possession limit of brook trout in streams tributary to Lake Superior above the posted boundary from 10 to 5, which is the same as the possession limit in the rest of the state.
- Expanding the lake trout season to include the first full weekend on October.
- Close the Lester River Falls angling (~100 feet lake ward from the Superior Street Bridge) to protect spawning fish that attempt to ascend the falls and become vulnerable to angler harvest.
- Open up seasonally closed waters on portions of the Knife River to angling as all steelhead fall under catch and release regulations and must be released.
Trout Stocking - The club has stocked trout in various streams along the north shore of Lake Superior in the spring. Local school children and the MN DNR were participants in this project.

Uskabwanka River Restoration Project
In cooperation with the MN DNR the Uskabwanka River, a tributary to the Cloquet River, the Arrowhead Fly Fishers club was involved in beaver dam removal and planting trees. We are in the process of obtaining grant monies to further the restoration efforts on the Uskabwanka river to be awarded in the Spring of 2009.
